Cat's Birthday HP Drabblethon 5 was made of win. THANK YOU so much to all involved, writers (and artist) and readers! :D :D :D
Thanks to bethbethbeth and everyone else who pimped this thing in their journals and encouraged new people to come and drabble for the kitties. Thanks to the prolific reviewers - especially bonfoi, who commented on everything (and, in a nice bit of karma, received three responses to that "Snupin adopting a cat" prompt). Thanks to moreteadk for squeeing madly and staying up late two nights in a row and posting drabble-recs.
All prompts now done. Some more than once, thanks to enthusiastic pinch-hitters.
I've updated the links on the big list, so you can just click on the done! next to each prompt. There were 123 participants, and we only lost seven along the way (a few turned up late). The final count is 132 creative items: 100-word drabbles, ficlets of various sizes (up to 1,664 words when femmequixotic couldn't stop Dracoing), and one drawing.

Now the cats are sleeping it off, and I'm curious: participants and passers-by, did you have a good time? Which prompts were you hoping to get? And which prompts were you totally scared of getting? Snape/Squid? (done! by _lore) Do tell. :)

10:50 am - Cat's (belated) Birthday HP Drabblethon, coming up!

Yes, the Cat's Birthday HP Drabblethon is back! :D Rather late this year, July rather than April, but hey - at least it's happening, and cats can't read calendars anyway.
July 25-26 weekend. On my LJ.
Fastest fest in the fandom - rather the opposite of a Big Bang - all happens in one weekend - and it's open to all genres, characters, pairings, whatever. Basic requirement: being game to try writing at least 100 words in 24 hours, no matter what prompt the Sorting Cat may give you. (That "no matter what prompt" should be in big neon lights.)

* The Giant Squid is a Horcrux. Destroying it is easier said than done.
* Harry pushes Dumbledore aside and drinks the green potion in the cave.
* Draco is Head Boy and a Veela seeking his mate - he shares private rooms with Hermione, who is Head Girl and has to marry Snape under the new Marriage Law; Snape is Harry's father; Ron plays chess, and talks with his mouth full.
* Hermione (or Draco) is haunted by Grindelwald's ghost.
* Snape is Dudley's father.

(Meant as a shout-out to the SS/HG folks, but the limerick tried to grow a plot.)
You know what kinda tickles me in reviews? Context. A hint or two at the reader's surroundings or circumstances. "I read this in the library/in the park/in bed... stayed up till 3 a.m. reading your fic... laughed so hard I woke the cat/parents/roommate... reading accompanied by tea/coffee/caviar/whole pack of chocolate biscuits..." - It's just fun to picture.

Sort of interesting, and disorienting, to wander back into the HP fandom on LJ and see a bunch of unfamiliar names producing fic (ooo, new writers to explore!) while others have moved on to SGA, ST, Merlin, whatever - but a whole bunch of Potter-flisters are still here, so - hey. *waves*
And nothing kicks the nostalgia up a few notches like a bit of new HP fic from Pogrebin. Check it out.

Gellert spends his nights reading the Bible like it is a bestseller. Separated from a British literary and critical tradition-- whose root practices, however now altered, grew from and alongside Biblical exegesis-- he reads the Bible like Milton would have read the Mahabharata if only he had gotten his hands on it. Think I've just about recovered from Yuletide now - or, at least, emerged from the total brainsuck that starts when fandom nominations open and ends with replying to comments on reveal-post. That's it, until October '09.
2009. o.O (Still getting used to that new number.)
Spent a little time spring-cleaning at FF.net, as I usually do around January - fixing or updating whatever needs attention. Finally finished dealing with FF.net's decision to remove the PRE tag from their severely restricted list of permitted HTML; sometime in mid-2008? I wasn't paying attention, so I don't know if they actually warned authors about this (probably not). First I knew of it was when some puzzled reviews came in. My Seuss parodies and the old SS/HG parody had been up there for years in nice harmless Courier, just how I wanted them - until the PRE tag vanished and took all their line-breaks. *headdesk* I fixed the Seuss parodies in August, and dealt with PtQ in a Nutshell just now.
Finally finished watching season two of Rome. (Got the DVDs last year, but distraction struck two episodes from the end.) Antony/Cleopatra incredibly cheesy. Servilia wins. Octavian: casting excellent, characterization middling. Must take another look at those Vorenus/Pullo Yuletide fics.
Haven't even looked at HP seasonal fests yet. This week I'm having another go at finishing that Little Women het melodrama, so I've nudged my brain into Alcott mode. Wish me luck.
P.S. I don't give a skrewt who the new Doctor is.

Title: Are We There Yet? (or, Fear and Loathing in Kent) [PG]
Summary: Snapshots of the bits of the pilgrimage that didn't have literary merit. It's three days' travel from London to Canterbury, and a lot of the pilgrims are jerks.
[Pilgrim outtakes - in gorgeous snarky pure-2008 dialogue that never misses a beat. Go look, for this has to be one of the funniest fics in Yuletide.]

Summary: Crake ascending and descending: a series of snapshots of his slow climb and blind fall.

This one's based on The Little Mermaid (not Disney). Possibly the best backstory ever done for the Witch, in all her vicious vitality; includes flashbacks to her youth. Smooth, powerful writing. Warning for non-con, violence.
Fandom: Another Country (movie)
Title: Pater Noster [NC-17]
Summary: Lead us not into temptation.
Fowler fic alert! Scary-brilliant with a "Gaaah!" and an extra facepalm. Set immediately post-canon - and yes, there's some Fowler/Bennett in there, but it's mostly a tour of Fowler's life and mind. Left me in need of a cup of tea and some fluff.
Fandom: Mythology - Greek and Roman
Title: Small Step For Man [NC-17]
Summary: Artemis/Apollo, as times change. Warning: Incest, references to violence (i.e. it's Greek myth)
The heartbreak of immortality - Artemis across the millennia, all the way to the present. Mortals die, nothing lasts, the world keeps changing, but the gods go on. A striking and very moving account of how this might feel.
